K2 Biofuels Partners with ANDRITZ to Meet Growing Demand for Sustainable Energy in India

The call for sustainable, efficient, and innovative solutions has never been greater globally. K2 Biofuels Private Limited, a key player in biofuel manufacturing in India, understood the importance of expanding their sustainable energy operations to stay ahead in the current energy landscape.

With a net worth of 27 million euros, the company set out to develop a 200 TPD (Tons Per Day) pellet plant and increase their current production capacity of 80 TPD in Village Khurshed Nagar, Haryana. To achieve this, they partnered with ANDRITZ Feed & Biofuel.

SOLUTIONS THAT CRUSH ANY CHALLENGE

One of the challenges this project presented was that the plant was required to process mustard husk and rice straw into biofuel pellets, a task that required advanced technology and expertise. These materials often have high initial moisture content, necessitating significant drying before they can be processed into pellets. High moisture levels can lead to microbial degradation and reduced energy efficiency during combustion. Additionally, the fibrous and tough nature of mustard husk and rice straw makes them harder to grind into a uniform particle size suitable for pelletizing, resulting in increased energy consumption and wear on grinding equipment.

Overcoming these challenges was essential to meet production targets, support sustainable practices, and strengthen the local energy supply.

ONE PARTNER FROM START TO END

ANDRITZ stepped in to provide a complete plant solution tailored to K2 Biofuels' needs. By leveraging our proven technology and turnkey solutions, ANDRITZ engineered a complete biomass processing plant that efficiently processes mustard husk and rice straw. "The challenge of processing mustard husk and rice straw was new, but our team was confident," says Pavan Pawar, General Manager at ANDRITZ. "Our past experience with similar materials and full trust in our equipment gave us the assurance we needed."

By having a single partner for the entire project, K2 Biofuels benefited from streamlined communication, reduced complexity, and improved coordination. This approach ensured that the entire production process, from initial drying and grinding to final pelletizing, was seamlessly integrated into the plant design and engineering. The plant will also integrate ANDRITZ’s advanced automation and process optimization solutions, which will ensure consistent and smooth operations, high efficiency, and reduced energy consumption and equipment wear.

The integration of advanced automation will not only optimize the production process but also meet evolving industry needs, which call for smart and innovative solutions that keep up with the technological pace other industries are at and that are crucial to achieving increasingly high industry standards.
