Scrubbers for the maritime industry - ANDRITZ SeaSOx

Clean air is the basis of a healthy life. With this in mind, ANDRITZ has developed its SeaSOx technology, which is the right solution for cleaning exhaust gas in order to meet the new requirements effective since January 1, 2020 aimed at reducing air pollution. ANDRITZ offers a complete portfolio for exhaust gas cleaning in the maritime industry. The exhaust gases from marine diesel engines contain harmful air pollutants such as sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide, and complex particulate matter.

These pollutants pose a considerable risk to human health and to the environment. The ANDRITZ SeaSOx technology is the right answer to comply with the new legal requirements worldwide, and the SeaSOx Scrubber Solutions – as I-type (inline) or U-type (bypass) in round or rectangular form – and SeaSOx Dual-/Multi-Filtration plants for SOx, NOx and fine particulate removal can minimize the environmental impact of maritime vessels. With ANDRITZ SeaSOx Port solution as additional option you even can meet the IMO MARPOL Annex VI regulations in the ports without a scrubber nor using compliant fuel.

Two ANDRITZ SeaSOx wet open loop scrubber systems for Dole Chile & Dole Colombia

Dole, operating between the United States, South America and Europe as the world's largest producer of bananas and pineapples, ordered two SeaSOx wet open loop scrubber systems in October 2019 for their reefer container vessels. Each ship has one main engine with 23.9 MW and four auxiliary engines, two of which have 2.8 MW and two with 3.8 MW. The total power output of each vessel is about 37 MW. ANDRITZ is responsible for engineering and supply of all the main equipment, such as pumps, scrubber tower, valves, CEMS and I&C. Retrofitting of the first ship has been scheduled for August 2020, with the second vessel to follow in September 2020. With this technology, Dole is able to burn High-sulfur Fuel Oil (HFO) and thus comply with the new emission regulations that come into force on January 1st, 2020.

Two ANDRITZ SeaSOxwet hybrid scrubber systems for the Chinese Chengxi Shipyard

The Chinese Chengxi Shipyard has ordered two SeaSOx wet hybrid scrubber systems in June 2019 for their container vessel newbuilds, which will be operated after completion by the Dole company. The two ships will start operation in October and December 2020. Even if the delivery time seems to be long, the yard needed the complete engineering package at a very early stage to implement the scrubber system in their ship design planning. In addition, these projects are the first references for a hybrid version of the SeaSOx technology, and mark therefore an important milestone in the development of this booming market. Hybrid means, that the system can operate in Open Loop (sea water is used as absorption media) and Closed Loop mode (caustic solution is used as absorption media). Additionally, the discharge water of the Closed Loop process has to be treated to reach the environmental limits.

The ships are equipped with one main engine with 16 MW and four auxiliary engines with 2 MW each. Hence, also the combination of different sources is a new design point, which is a very important reference in this market. ANDRITZ is responsible for engineering and supply of all main equipment like pumps, scrubber tower, separator, heat exchanger, valves, CEMS, and I&C.

MED-G CERTIFICATION - Important milestone reached

With the MED-G certification from the DNVGL classification society, ANDRITZ has received its first confirmation of safety and environmental compliance for a scrubber installed on a maritime vessel. This certification is necessary in order to obtain a permit to continue operating the ship with high-sulfur fuel and using an SO2 removal unit. In this special case, it is also a world premiere because the MV Piana uses the innovative SeaSOxdry technology. No other ship globally has an installation using this kind of technology. SeaSOxdry not only removes SO2, but

also particulates, there is no plume produced at the stack outlet. In addition, no water is discharged. Hence, this certification marks an important milestone in bringing this promising technology forward and also gaining acceptance for it from other clients. The dry SO2 removal solution is a very attractive technology, especially for ferries operating in European waters.

ANDRITZ Air Pollution Control to retrofit a wet SeaSOx scrubber on a 300 m long bulk carrier, operating between Chile and China. The agreement was signed in July 2018 to install a SeaSOxwet system having a square footprint with very low space requirements of 2.8 m side length for one main engine with 18.66 MW. The system was designed for removal of SO2 from 3.5 to 0.5%S and will be installed in September 2019.

Exhaust gas emissions from marine diesel engines, mainly containing nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides, carbon dioxides, and complex particulate matter (PM), are a big concern for human health and the environment. In response to these concerns, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has introduced regulations for emission control under Annex VI of the MARPOL Convention. Annex VI imposes a framework of mandatory limits on emissions of sulfur oxides (SOx) and nitrogen oxides (NOx), both globally and within designated sea areas known as Emission Control Areas (ECA).

The regulations specify the sulfur content allowed in the fuel to limit the SOx emission. A ship may burn fuel with a higher sulfur content, providing that SOx emissions are controlled to a level that is not higher than the levels emitted when using compliant fuel. In order to comply with the new regulations, ships must either use expensive, low-sulfur fuel or install exhaust gas cleaning units. Based on the operating profile of maritime vessels, exhaust gas cleaning can secure enormous savings in fuel costs and thus provide payback periods of between one and three years. The ANDRITZ SeaSOx technology is the right answer to meet the new requirements and can be installed on all types of maritime vessels, either on a new build or retrofit basis thanks to its flexibility.
