ANDRITZ supplies pumps for modern karton PM5 project
At the beginning of 2014, ANDRITZ supplied 143 process pumps for the new PM5 lightweight packaging paper machine at Modern Karton, Turkey. The new PM5 line features low consumption of fresh water and energy. It is designed for a production speed of 1,500 m/min and has a wire width of 8.01 m, with an expected average production capacity of 400,000 tons per year. PM5 went into operation successfully in mid-2015.
ANDRITZ was chosen to supply the pumps for all process steps at the new paper machine, starting with the stock preparation system, stock supply, headbox feed, dewatering, and water circuit, and ending with waste water treatment. ANDRITZ supplied process pumps with different impeller designs, i.e. closed, semi-open, open, and vortex, for stock and water applications. Highest efficiencies in combination with a robust design, especially in fan and medium-consistency pumps, guarantee low energy consumption and high availability.
The Turkish company Modern Karton is part of the EREN group and one of the largest manufacturers of board and packaging paper in Europe. The site is located in Çorlu, 120 km west of Istanbul, and almost halfway between Istanbul and the Greek border. Currently, the mill produces 630,000 tons of packaging paper annually on two machines, both for the domestic and the export market. Together with the output from the new PM5 paper machine, the production rate will increase to 1.1 million tons per year, which is equal to half of Turkey’s production capacity.
