The Federal Minister for European and International Affairs Mr. Schallenberg accompanied by the Austrian Chamber of Commerce, hosted an event for the opening of the Austrian Embassy in Ghana. In front of the Ghanaian government, various embassies, and major publicly traded Austrian companies, he highlighted Africa’s political, social, and economic significance.

On this occasion, ANDRITZ met with Ghana’s Deputy Minister of Energy, Hon. Collins Adomako-Mensah, and Mr. Emmanuel Antwi-Darkwa, Managing Director of the Volta River Authority (VRA), to discuss future projects. Both parties emphasized their outstanding relationship with ANDRITZ.

For over 50 years, ANDRITZ has been active in Ghana’s Hydro market, providing turbines, generators, and electrical equipment for two major hydropower plants on the Volta River, Akosombo and Kpong, with a combined output of more than 1,180 MW.

Ghana’s hydropower potential is estimated to exceed 2,000 MW for large projects, with 800 MW for smaller hydro projects across the country. Expanding hydroelectric capacity in Ghana will play a key role in Africa’s energy transition.

ANDRITZ is committed to supporting Africa’s energy transition by providing clean and sustainable hydro power for the change.

22/04/2024: Senegal, the Sambangalou hydropower project is moving forward

The main features of the Sambangalou hydropower project on the Gambia River (Senegal) are a 108 m high dam with a 4 billion m³ water reservoir and an installed capacity of 128 MW. The project, set to enhance energy accessibility and sustainability in West Africa, is located in the southeast of the country, about 800 km from Dakar in the Kédougou region, directly on the border with Guinea.

ANDRITZ, as part of a consortium with VINCI Construction, has been awarded the contract to supply the electromechanical equipment for the new Sambangalou dam in 2022. The contract comprises a comprehensive "from water-to-wire" solution, including the installation of three state-of-the-art Francis turbines, generators and ancillary equipment.

The project will generate electricity for the four countries of the Gambia River Basin Development Organisation (OMVG). The distribution infrastructure for the power grid of the four OMVG countries (The Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau and Senegal) consists of 1,677 km of 225 kV high-voltage transmission lines, 15 substations and a distribution center.

Despite initial challenges, including logistical hurdles and commercial complexity, ANDRITZ was able to quickly set up its own local production of penstocks and bottom outlet pipes. Thanks to the highly motivated team on site and in the back office, the slab for the production hall was designed and cast, a huge hall was erected and two gantry cranes from a previous project were adapted to the needs of this production site. Since the beginning of March 2024, the pipe elements for this project have been manufactured close to the construction site. Within four months, all the pipes will be bent, welded, and recalibrated to allow the bending machine to be demobilised again soon. The goal is to have all pipe segments completed and ready for installation within 10 months from the start.

The importance of the Sambangalou hydropower project goes beyond electricity generation and includes other socio-economic benefits for the region. In addition to providing electricity to households and businesses, the project promises to facilitate agricultural irrigation, improve food security, and provide access to clean drinking water for neighboring districts.
The project continues to take shape. Sambangalou hydropower plant is a lighthouse project for a brighter, greener future in Senegal and the whole region. ANDRITZ is proud to be part of this important undertaking.
