ANDRITZ gasification technology: The pathway to produce advanced biofuels

Having established that there is a direct and plentiful demand for advanced biofuels to defossilize the transport industry, let’s consider the technology that makes this solution viable.  ANDRITZ gasification technology fits the challenge perfectly and can be upscaled to satisfy fast-growing demand.

The fossil fuel industries have long relied on refining crude oil into liquid fuel for cars, trucks, ships, and airplanes.  

An opportunity is now being presented for pioneers who want to utilize wood residues to produce advanced biofuels.  

Jean Taillon, Director, Business Development for Gasification at ANDRITZ says, “There are various technologies available to produce advanced biofuels products. When talking about the large scale-up required to make a viable and cost-effective impact on the reduction in the use of fossil fuels, ANDRITZ is one of the rare technology providers that can realistically take on this challenge.”  

EXTENSIVE PILOT TESTING AND TURNKEY TECHNOLOGY SUPPLY  

The advanced biofuels solution from ANDRITZ provides technology based on oxygen-blown, pressurized fluidized bed (BFB) gasification. Furthermore, ANDRITZ also has the technology and know-how to supply all wood processing, wood drying components and potentially supplemented with an electrolysis unit to ensure a solution for the production of ready-to-use advanced biofuels.  

For the biofuel synthesis portion, ANDRITZ is partnering with the most effective players on the market. The potential synthesis are methanol to produce bio-methanol or SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuels), Fischer-Tropsch synthesis to produce bio-gasoline, bio-diesel or SAF, and methanation synthesis to produce Renewable Natural Gas. These advanced biofuels will then be used for the road, maritime or aviation sectors.

To achieve advanced biofuel product quality, ANDRITZ gasification operates at high pressure and is supported with oxygen and steam as gasifying agents. This has been demonstrated in extensive pilot testing and proven successful in producing synthetic natural gas (SNG), biodiesel, and bio-gasoline. Subsequently, the gas reforming has been changed to partial oxidation (POX) technology which has been commercially demonstrated and is a proven concept.                     

“To achieve economies of scale there needs to be a reliable concept backed by a solid international technology company. ANDRITZ is the pathway to the production of advanced biofuels,” concludes Taillon.   

ANDRITZ already has a successful reference in the town of Skive in Denmark.


The plant operates a 20 MWth CHP power plant based on woody biomass air-blown gasification feeding three gas engines to produce 6 MWe of power and 12 MWth of district heating.
